In the Spring of 1999, Death Cab for Cutie songwriter/frontman Ben Gibbard had some time on his hands and a batch of songs running around in his head that didn't seem quite right for his band. He also had a few broken keyboards scattered about, a guitar that wouldn't stay in tune, an old four-track home-recording machine, and a Walkman with a built-in condenser mic. What would have been a recipe for disaster in the hands of a lesser musician and songwriter resulted instead in two charming lo-fi releases (a five-song self-titled CD and the Envelope Sessions cassette tape) on the excellent Bellingham, WA scene-documenting Elsinor label under the one-off moniker All-Time Quarterback. James Browne, Ed East, Steve Bond, Simon (Boris) Exton, Luke Sherwood and Trevor Wensely. They were briefly joined by
a 7th member, a bass player, Frank, but the experiment did not last. After gigging regularly around many of Bristols pubs and
clubs the band turned professional after the members had completed their degrees, however, Luke decided to leave and the
band was reduced to a five piece.

The sound at this point could almost be categorised as anorak pop with influences from Sarah bands, Jim Ruiz and The Smiths.

They combine a New Wave aesthetic with a swirling guitar-driven sound reminiscent of The Bolshoi,
Bauhaus, and other proto-goth bands prominent in the late 1970s and early '80s.
The band signed with Victory Records and released they first album, Don't Cut Your Fabric to This
Year's Fashion in the same year, played in The Emerson Theater in 2005 and released the second
album An Army of Shapes Between Wars in 2006. In the same year, Action Action toured with Maxeen,
Morningwood, The Sounds, Jonezetta, We Are The Fury, The Cult and Something for Rockets on various
legs of their US gigs. The song Paper Cliché is featured in the game MVP 06: NCAA Baseball.
Currently, Action Action isn't signed with any label, but are working on new material to be released in 2008.

Borrowing their name from a minor character in Tim Burton's comedy favorite Pee-Wee's Big Adventure,
the Casio-centric group came together in late 2003; Forster and Hart befriended one another while traveling
by train from Vermont to New York. From there, they became fast friends and began writing songs.

Saporta has offered several reasons for Cobra Starship's name. In an interview with Buzznet.com, he offered that the project's name came from
a jacket he had with the word Cobra on it and from another jacket he had that said "Starship Disco." Rock Sound magazine reported, however,
that the name is a play on Jefferson Starship's band name.
